COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UNO is sponsoring the Omaha Farmers Market in Aksarben Village—units can email Michael Smith to reserve free tables. The market runs Sundays from 9 A.M. to 1 P.M. through Oct. 11, with reservations available on a first come basis for selected dates from July 5 to Oct. 11.  University of Nebraska Omaha

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Three siblings operating their family speakeasy temporarily renamed it Censored Shop after a judge denied their injunction request to block state fines for using barber-related terms, and they plan to appeal the ruling (citing free speech concerns).  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The University of Nebraska at Omaha received a $749,979 NSF grant to launch its NoyceSTEM Program, which supports future STEM educators with scholarships, mentoring, and fieldwork at high-need local schools. Applications for the second round open this spring with new scholars set to start in the fall.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Norris FFA students planted 28 soybean varieties at a test plot across from their school on May 12 to gain hands-on experience in production agriculture.  WOWT
  • Bellevue Public Schools celebrated student achievements in journalism, business, and health sciences competitions as Bellevue West’s Isaiah Nomiyama was named NSAA state champion in yearbook layout (others earned top placements). The board also approved a consent agenda on claims and strategic updates like Project Shape-Up.  Flatwater Free Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Bodo the sloth bear, a guest favorite at Henry Doorly Zoo, will leave soon for an AZA accredited facility as part of a Species Survival Plan to support his species long term health. The zoo says his move is key to broader conservation efforts.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Councilmember Pete Festersen wants to improve the Benson district entryways by turning an empty lot into a green space instead of another gas station. Some business owners prefer more parking, and he said the plan would give the area a unique look.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • Nebraska Medicine said UNMC is continuing hantavirus assessments for cruise ship passengers using regular symptom monitoring and interviews led by federal public health officials (15 passengers are at the National Quarantine Unit and one patient is at the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit).  KFAB
  • Dozens of products, including snack mixes, pizzas, and potato chips, have been recalled because of possible salmonella contamination; Omaha residents are urged to check their pantries and follow health guidelines (contact USDA at 888-674-6854) to ensure safety.  KETV

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Nebraska softball team ended the regular season atop the NFCA Coaches Poll with a 46-6 record and a 21-game win streak, and they will host the Lincoln Regional for the NCAA Tournament on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday with Louisville, Grand Canyon, and South Dakota scheduled to compete.  WOWT
  • Omaha Baseball is in its final regular-season series as they host South Dakota State from today through May 16 at Tal Anderson Field — games start at 6 p.m. CT and are streamed on the Summit League Network following a series win over Oral Roberts.  University of Nebraska Omaha
