COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Omaha metro events this weekend include a Mother’s Day market at Regency Shopping Center, a sip and shop event at Trucks and Taps, and a Señora brunch in Ralston along with brunch and bingo in La Vista—free activities feature a Cinco de Mayo festival, farmers market events, pop-up bridal shows and live music across the area.  WOWT
  • Omaha neighborhood groups received grants to help fund park renovations in 25 neighborhoods. The funds will support upgrades such as new playground equipment and updated facilities with projects planned to begin soon.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • South Omaha is celebrating Latino culture this weekend as the 105th annual Cinco de Mayo Omaha festival takes place along South 24th Street between L and O streets—events began Friday evening and continue today and through Sunday with live music, carnival rides for kids, and a Saturday health fair offering free screenings.  WOWT
  • UNO hosted the Wambli Sapa Memorial Powwow on April 19 at Sapp Fieldhouse to honor Native American heritage and Fred LeRoy's legacy. Over 100 dancers, drummers, and vendors gathered to celebrate their culture — the event was organized by the Office of Student Leadership, Involvement, and Inclusion and the Intertribal Student Council.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • An exhibit honoring Omaha artist Iggy Sumnik is open at UNO's Community Engagement Center until May 16—showcasing key pieces from his acclaimed body of work. Visitors can explore the gallery to appreciate his contributions to local art during this showcase.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • McMillan Middle School's academic pentathlon team will travel to San Antonio for the National Academic Pentathlon Competition on May 15, where both the 7th and 8th grade teams earned state titles to qualify. The team has won the state competition 14 years in a row and studies five subjects—math, social science, science, literature and fine arts as it prepares for the event.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Residents of City View apartments in Omaha have not received OHA vouchers since April—because the property failed inspection. OHA said the 33 voucher holders have 120 days to relocate—unless the receiver corrects the safety and health issues.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The 2025 Greater Omaha Heart & Stroke Walk will take place on May 17 at Gene Leahy Mall with check-in starting at 8 a.m. and the walk kicking off at 9:30 a.m.—participants can also learn free hands-only CPR with help from the Omaha Fire Department.  3 News Now
