EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty leaders at UNO urged administration to delay closing Child Care Center slated to shut on May 22, arguing the decision lacked sufficient consultation with staff and parents.   • UNO celebrated 2,059 graduates (including 638 first-generation students) on May 7 and May 8 at Baxter Arena, where master’s and doctoral candidates also received recognition. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Highway 36 between Highway 133 + Bennington Road will close Monday for resurfacing and bridge repairs. The 90-day work will require drivers to use alternate routes like Rainwood Road or State Street.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The CDC is deploying teams to meet American passengers from the hantavirus-stricken cruise ship, escorting the 17 onboard from the Canary Islands by a charter flight and placing them in quarantine at Nebraska's National Quarantine Unit (with the Biocontainment Unit) to prevent virus spread.  KETV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • A vacant downtown lot is set to redevelop into a five-story building with 45 affordable units and 25 market-rate apartments for seniors and others. The project has received city council approval for over $1.1 million in tax increment financing and involves CHI Health as a partner.  WOWT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Omaha won 8 to 0 over South Dakota State in five innings Friday to reach the Summit League Softball Championship final, and they will face South Dakota today at 1 p.m. CT.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Nebraska volleyball will travel to Las Vegas to play in the Players Era — Elite Volleyball Championship doubleheader at T-Mobile Arena. The team will face UNLV on Aug. 29 and Texas on Aug. 30, setting an exciting start for the season.  KETV
  • Nebraska softball took major Big Ten honors last Friday as head coach Rhonda Revelle was named coach of the year, pitcher Jordy Frahm earned his second consecutive pitcher award, and freshman Alexis Jensen was honored as freshman of the year; the team tied a conference record by finishing 23-1 in league play.  KETV
