COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Well-Read Women of Omaha book club, started in 2018, gives women a safe place to share their love for books and mark milestones like graduations and weddings. Organizer Dasia Horne said the group also holds book fairs — a community effort to boost local literacy.  KETV
  • Orel Alliance, a local nonprofit founded in 2024, opened its first community center at Bel Air Plaza near 120th & West Center Road on May 3. The center will house its offices and community programs after the organization provided over $1.5 million in aid to Ukrainian families.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Center for Immigrant and Refugee Advancement launches a paid externship for UNL law students to work on immigration cases after the Immigration Clinic closed this semester. Applications are open through July, offering students hands-on experience (15-20 hrs per week) while supporting community legal access.  Nebraska Public Media
  • Creighton University and the University of Nebraska report a vendor-related security issue that locked out students, staff & faculty from accessing Canvas since May 7. IT teams are working with the vendor to restore system access.  KETV
  • UNO students are facing a Canvas outage today as a global cyberattack on Instructure, initiated in late April by ShinyHunters, disrupts access to coursework and exposes student data (names, emails, IDs).  The Gateway
  • Brownell Talbot's robotics team won the VEX Robotics World Championship in St. Louis in April—they built their robot over many hours and won every match against top teams from over 40 countries.  WOWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • First Star Recycling, Nebraska's largest facility, is offering free public tours in May to show Omaha residents how recyclable materials are sorted and processed near 102nd and I streets. The next tour is on Thursday, May 14 (1-2:30 p.m.).  3 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Twenty-five soldiers who lost their lives on Omaha Beach during D-Day were laid to rest yesterday at Omaha National Cemetery after their remains were identified at Offutt Air Force Base (researchers are still working to name 18 others) as a tribute to their sacrifice.  KETV
  • Gov. Pillen’s board approved state tax incentives for an Omaha soccer stadium & a Lincoln volleyball complex Thursday, voting 3-1 for each while rejecting nine other proposals. The Omaha project is a $140M open-air stadium with a mixed-use district and the Lincoln facility will need voter approval.  Nebraska Examiner

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developers will demolish the unused silos in Hanscom Park for an apartment complex with around 230 units. The Omaha Planning Board approved over $10 million in TIF funding Wednesday, and demolition plus construction are set to begin within 12 months (affordable options and trail plans are still being reviewed).  3 News Now

  • Omaha Supernovas beat top-seeded Indy in five sets in the MLV semifinals, avenging their last playoff loss. The team will compete for a $1 million prize on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. as the championship match airs on Ion Network — First Alert 6’s subchannel 6.4.  WOWT
