GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Legislature advanced a bill that would let Omaha and Lincoln city councils align local elections with the presidential race—giving voters a chance to approve the change and reduce costs. • State Senator Ben Hansen held a press conference to support his bill setting rules for medical marijuana, arguing that without change, patients would lose access to needed medicine. Nebraska Attorney General Mike Hilgers said the bill would boost the black market — a risk he attributes to a shift toward recreational use — and both officials are now speaking with lawmakers about next steps.  Nebraska Public Media
  • Former city councilman Ben Gray and LaVonya Goodwin, executive director of the North 24th Street Business Improvement District, advanced from the primary with Gray leading by more than 1,700 votes—Goodwin edged out the incumbent by 27 votes and both are canvassing ahead of the May 13 election to offer plans focused on crime deterrence and housing improvements.  KETV
  • The Gillen family of Bellevue has fought for 13 years to let their son, who has severe epilepsy, try medical cannabis for his seizures and to avoid the heavy drugs that make him very sleepy — they continue to push for a bill that recently passed a Senate committee vote.
