COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Salvation Army hosted an evening food pantry at the Burrows Center near 61st NW Radial, giving free food to residents. People who missed it can visit during regular hours from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. on most weekdays.  KETV
  • Today, 50 family members attended the identification ceremony for D-Day soldiers whose remains recovered from Normandy are finally coming home. Their reburial will be held tomorrow at Omaha National Cemetery — ensuring these service members receive long-awaited honor.  WOWT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Metropolitan Community College held a ribbon cutting ceremony on May 6 to open its new federally designated small business development center at MCC at the Ashton. The center offers free counseling, business training and resources to help local entrepreneurs grow.  KETV
  • The Only Facial, a top-rated facial spa, will open its second Omaha location Monday, May 11 at 17219 Evans Street just south of West Maple Road. Owners Skip and Katy Joyce (who run a Salon at 1020 South 74th Plaza) expect to draw more local clients.  Grow Omaha

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will perform at The Astro Theater in La Vista on Saturday, June 6 at 7:30 p.m. as part of its 60th-anniversary farewell tour, with Brit Taylor joining the show and tickets starting at $50.90.  WOWT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Nebraska Department of Labor (NDOL) reported the unemployment rate stayed at 3.1% in March, matching February's rate and slightly above January's 3.0%; the state workforce included over one million people.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNO senior Sarah Pacholski graduates as her father Michael retires after 21 years at the university. Both will continue contributing to UNO – Michael as an adjunct professor and Sarah as a master’s student with a teaching assistantship in the fall.  The Gateway
  • The University of Nebraska Medical Center has named Dr. H. Dele Davies as its priority candidate for chancellor. He has served as interim since 2024 and will visit campuses in Omaha, Lincoln, Kearney, Norfolk and Scottsbluff as part of the vetting process.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Eppley Airfield is showcasing progress on its terminal expansion as crews finish the glass exterior+ new concession spaces are set to be added while updated ticketing counters improve efficiency. Phased openings will begin in about a year as construction wraps up in 2028.  KETV
  • Ted Turner’s death leaves his nonprofit’s promise to cover property taxes on nearly half a million acres of Sandhills ranchland in doubt. A law professor noted that if the nonprofit seeks a tax exemption for its bison meat sales, Cherry County may lose over $960,000 in annual revenue.  WOWT
  • State Sen. John Cavanaugh tore up attack flyers on Saturday in Lincoln and used parts to make collage signs that support his campaign — an act that sparks local debate over how his move to Congress may shift the Legislature's balance.  WOWT
  • USDA researchers may be relocated to Nebraska as part of a plan to close BARC (Beltsville Agricultural Research Center) in Maryland, with employees set to move to 27 facilities.
