COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Twenty-five U.S. service members lost on D-Day will be buried with full honors tomorrow at Omaha National Cemetery. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency confirmed the remains on Aug. 13, 2025 — giving families a long-awaited moment to honor their heroes.  KETV
  • Kids Can Community Center honored five local leaders with its annual 'Can Do' awards at Tuesday's luncheon (kids sang and special guest speakers addressed the event) as proceeds benefit the center's mission to educate, engage and inspire children.  KETV
  • Eight veterans with no known family contacts were laid to rest today at Omaha National Cemetery; local supporters and military officials joined the ceremony to honor their service.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Hollywood star Ann-Margret will appear in person at the Omaha Classic Film Event on Friday, May 15 at the Omaha Community Playhouse, where she will hold a Q&A session & proceeds benefit the Douglas County Historical Society.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Six Omaha teams earned perfect APR marks in the 2024-25 academic year, officials said Tuesday. The teams (Maverick hockey, women's golf, softball, women's swimming and diving, women's tennis and volleyball) scored 1,000, and three also received multi-year recognition for the cohort that began 2021-22.  University of Nebraska Omaha

  • Gov. Jim Pillen visited Pryor Ranch in Omaha on Tuesday to review needs for Nebraska's horse and racehorse industry — he explained a new program where the state pays for veterinary education if students work eight years in rural communities and was joined by pre-vet students and equine experts.  KETV
  • At the Omaha National Cemetery, five veterans were honored on Tuesday in a memorial service for unaccompanied veterans, with the Marine Corps League and detachments from Omaha, Gretna, and Lincoln participating (the ceremony featured flag folding, TAPS, and a rifle volley).  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • In Nebraska, Gov. Jim Pillen signed a law in April protecting peer support conversations for first responders from being used in court or disciplinary proceedings. The measure is part of a national effort to boost mental health support for emergency workers exposed to trauma.  Nebraska Examiner

  • Omaha Westside wide receiver Maurice Purify II signed with Nebraska football as part of its 2026 recruiting class and will enroll this summer. He follows in his father’s footsteps (who played for the Huskers in 2006 and 2007).  KETV
  • Omaha softball's Mike Heard was named Summit League coach of the year for the second time after leading the Mavs to a regular season title + Maddia Groff and Marra Cramer also earned conference honors as the team secured the top tournament seed.  KETV
  • The Huskers will join three top volleyball programs in Texas for an exhibition – billed as the 'Super Bowl of Volleyball' – in August.  WOWT
