COMMUNITY NEWS

  • In downtown Omaha, Latisha Roth made croutons at Table Grace Café as part of a 10-day program that helped her rebuild her life after recovery and earn a food safety certification—she now works at a bakery with guidance from coach Kelly Adams. Local professionals each contribute $400 a year to a pooled fund through the Omaha Community Foundation that awards grants to small nonprofits to support job training and community success.  KETV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Warren Buffett stepped down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway—shocking shareholders and prompting the Omaha mayor to say the news was unexpected.  WOWT
  • Warren Buffett announced at an annual meeting downtown that he will step down as CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and named Greg Abel as his successor—pending board approval—and the change is expected to be finalized before year's end.  3 News Now

CRIME NEWS

  • Bryan Jeselink, a Texas man arrested on April 12, was charged with first-degree murder + seven felony counts after killing Billie Meadows near North Bend; he will be arraigned on May 15 in Fremont and could face life in prison if convicted.  Omaha World-Herald

EDUCATION NEWS

  • High school students in OPS’s pathways program are building a three-bedroom house at 4522 N. 40th St near North High School—learning hands-on construction and design skills with Blair Freeman and local trades professionals while keeping up with classes—while the project, funded by the OPS Foundation, is set to be completed by early May.  Omaha World-Herald

SPORTS NEWS

  • Omaha rallied from a five-run deficit to beat St. Thomas 11-7 in the finale of a three-game Summit League series at Koch Field in Saint Paul on Sunday — key hitters Tyler Bishop and Jackson Trout drove the comeback. The Mavericks are now tied for third in the league and will host a three-game series against South Dakota State from May 9 at Tal Anderson Field.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Adrian Dowell announced Sunday that Jamie Carey was hired as the Mavericks’ tenth head coach to lead the women's basketball team, replacing Carrie Banks after she posted a 51 to 89 record over five seasons (Carey played four seasons in the WNBA and coached UTSA to an American Athletic Conference title). She begins her role immediately and looks forward to working with the Omaha community to grow the program.  WOWT
