CRIME NEWS

  • A 23-year-old Omaha man pleaded no contest to fatally shooting a 24-year-old man in Old Market and was sentenced to serve 15 to 20 years in prison.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Omaha police held 34-year-old Anthony Washington on $200,000 bond after he allegedly fired a drive-by shot at two men mowing outside a house near 27th and Burdette—52-year-old Donald Simpson and 48-year-old Robert Jackson—who were hospitalized with critical but not life-threatening injuries.  KETV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Today, an estimated 40,000 visitors are in Omaha for the annual Berkshire Hathaway shareholders weekend — an event drawing global attention and set to boost local spending by over $21 million. Deborah Ward from Visit Omaha said local hotels have reported no room availability, with tourists from 13 countries already exploring the city — marking a strong start to the weekend.  KETV

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials in Omaha, alongside local partners including the Arbor Day Foundation and Papio-Missouri River NRD, launched the 10-year Replant Omaha Initiative to restore the city’s tree canopy damaged by last summer’s storms — the program will plant 25,000 shade trees and educate homeowners on tree care.  Grow Omaha

  • Nebraska lawmakers will debate a $262 million budget shortfall with LB 21 and LB 264 when senators return, and public meetings on medical marijuana are scheduled from May 3 to May 5 at Carpenter’s Union Hall, UNO Thompson Center, and Southeast Community College. City officials set May 2 deadlines for Omaha election ballots and in-person voter registration by 6 p.m., Berkshire Hathaway shareholders hold events starting today with a main meeting at CHI Health Center, Bryan Waugh—ex-Kearney Police Chief—is named the new Nebraska State Patrol superintendent, a Council Bluffs man was sentenced to 45 years for a woman's death, and Denise Powell entered the race for Nebraska’s 2nd Congressional District.  WOWT

  • Local artist Melissa Stephens of The Cordial Cherry in Omaha is partnering with Synbiotic Health to mix dark chocolate with probiotic strains into a new product called Ele Chocolates—designed to improve gut health and ease symptoms like heartburn.
