COMMUNITY NEWS

  • One year after an EF4 tornado struck parts of the Omaha metro, some residents have returned to rebuilt homes while others still wait to move back—local building firms have issued permits and waived fees to speed recovery. Today, two local churches plan to host a joint anniversary event from 4 to 5 to mark the tornado’s first anniversary.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Meddys opened on March 16th at Village Pointe in Omaha in a former jeweler’s space and offers fast-casual Mediterranean fare — dishes like hummus, shawarma and seasoned meats — inspired by founder Alex Harb’s Lebanese roots; the restaurant is still awaiting a liquor license with management expecting final approval within the next couple weeks.  Grow Omaha
  • UNO’s Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications was named In-House Marketing Team of the Year at the AMA Omaha Chapter Pinnacle Awards on April 23 and won seven awards for leadership, strategy, and creativity. ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The American Lung Association released its State of the Air report on Thursday, finding that Omaha’s air quality worsened over recent years with 8.2 unhealthy ozone days—up from 1.7 days last year—and an F grade. The report also noted that particle pollution remained at 1.8 unhealthy days with a C grade while extreme heat and wildfires played a role in deteriorating the air.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Douglas County started work to build a new $22 million mental health center on its campus at 42nd and Pacific, which will move behavioral health programs from the nearby health center to a separate space. The center will include inpatient and outpatient areas and is expected to be ready for a move by December 2026 + county officials say the new design will create a better layout for patient care.  Omaha World-Herald
