COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A nonprofit in Omaha helps families move off public benefits by teaching them to avoid the cliff effect—where a small income change can reduce support. One man in the program earned a promotion, his wife found a job, and he saved enough for a home down payment after six months in the program.  WOWT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Early Saturday morning, Omaha Police say a 17-year-old was pulled from a burning car near 72nd and Izard after his vehicle struck a tree at high speed—he was taken to CHI Bergan Mercy Hospital where he was pronounced dead.  WOWT
  • Two people were hospitalized after a high-speed crash in South Omaha—authorities said the incident is under investigation.  WOWT

  • Bawarchi Indian Cuisine at 17903 Pierce Plaza changed its name to Biryaniwala while keeping the same ownership and adding new menu items, a renovated dining room and a patio add-on. The restaurant is in Spring Ridge Shopping Center near 180th and Pacific Street (the update was announced April 20th) (renovations are complete).  Grow Omaha

CRIME NEWS

  • A man aged 23 from Omaha was sentenced to two and a half years in prison on Wednesday after he was found guilty of not stopping to help following a run that hit a woman and killed her and had his license revoked.  Omaha World-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • The queer prom took place on Friday evening at the Milo Bail Student Center with a Garden of Eden theme that featured food, drinks and music. Board members said the event gave queer and trans students a safe space to dance and feel accepted—offering a second chance for those who missed their traditional prom.  The Gateway

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Nebraska’s unemployment rate dropped to 2.9% in March as the state labor force reached a record high of over 1,080,000, the Nebraska Department of Labor announced Friday — although the rate is up from 2.6% last March and the nation’s rate climbed to 4.2%.  Nebraska Examiner

EDUCATION NEWS

  • New Horizon Academy broke ground last week on a new building for childhood learning and daycare at Fountain Ridge Office Park southeast of 192nd and West Dodge Expressway in Omaha. The building will be built just south of R and R Realty's Waterford office building and adds to the academy's network of more than 100 schools.  Grow Omaha
