COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Friendship Home is parking a StarTran bus in Omaha to collect donations for its 27th annual Stuff the Bus drive this Saturday and Sunday. Community members are invited to drop off needed items at the shelter.  WOWT
  • Omaha’s new $158 million central library opens today at its home on 72nd and Dodge Streets (a key civic square) as part of National Library Week. Residents can join the special event to explore the facility built to serve local needs.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Omaha was ranked the second-best large city for recent college graduates in a Tuesday report by Glassdoor and Redfin that evaluated housing, jobs, and quality of life; the study noted diverse opportunities including Fortune 500 employers + affordable starter homes with prices at $195,000 and average salaries of $59,123.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNO’s Student Government Association held its annual gala Thursday night in Mammal Hall (Rod Rhoden wing), where leaders celebrated with a black and gold theme, received awards, and shared advice on balancing school and life. The event also raised ideas for more inclusive leadership on campus.  The Gateway

  • The April Sampson Cancer Center hosted an art festival yesterday to raise money for cancer patients + local artists and community members came together to support healing.  WOWT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Creighton softball swept St. John's (13-6) in a doubleheader series in New York with key hits driving the win. The Jays will face UConn in a weekend series starting Friday at 6 p.m.  KETV
  • At the Bryan Clay Invitational on Saturday, Omaha Track and Field ran its fastest 4x400-meter relay in Division I history, finishing in 3:45.85 (nearly top-10). The team will split for next weekend events at Indianola for the Kip Janvrin Open and Des Moines for the Drake Relays.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Nebraska softball dominated Minnesota this past weekend with a 4 to 0 win on Friday and a 17 to 2 rout on Saturday that featured two grand slams and a burst of 10 runs in the fifth inning, and the teams will meet in the series finale today at noon.  KETV
  • The Metro Baseball Tournament Championship took place in Elkhorn on Saturday, where Westside won an 8 to 5 game over Millard North. A five-run seventh inning pushed Westside ahead after both teams had tied at two earlier in the contest.  KETV
  • Former Husker forward Berke Buyuktuncel signed with Vanderbilt on Apr. 18 and will join their basketball program after finishing his time with Nebraska. He is set to start a new chapter with his new team.  WOWT
  • The Huskers opened their home series on Friday with an 8-7 win over No. 12 USC in a 10-inning contest and later won 3-1 against the Bluejays after a bonus fourth set.  WOWT
  • Former Husker pitcher Steve Spurgeon sang the National Anthem at Nebraska's USC game. He said it was a full circle moment as he returned to the field where his journey began and now leads his band, The Confidentials + uniting the community through music.  KETV
