COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Non-profit Healing Ribbons celebrated the grand opening of its new home on Friday, ending its need to travel for classes and events. The organization will now offer sessions on second and fourth Saturdays and Tuesday and Thursday evenings—helping indigenous and two-spirit community members connect with their culture and heal generational trauma.  WOWT
  • A tornado swept through Irvington last night and destroyed several homes while leaving others with heavy damage. Neighbors have begun cleaning up downed trees and debris — officials are patrolling the area to protect affected properties.  KETV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Thursday night, more than a dozen tornado reports were confirmed across Nebraska and Iowa as KETV viewers captured twisters and funnels on camera — one near 72nd Street and Dutch Hall Road — while crews worked to assess damage.  KETV

CRIME NEWS

  • An Omaha man, Davon Barnes, was sentenced to 30 months in prison and two years of supervised release in Douglas County District Court for leaving the scene of a hit-and-run crash that killed pedestrian Danayjha Britt last summer near 24th and Decatur Street—his license has been revoked for 15 years.  WOWT
  • The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said crews from Nebraska Game and Parks, Omaha Fire and Bellevue Fire will search the Missouri River today near NP Dodge Park for the 18 year old Laina Green, 18 year old Lah Tray Moo and 12 year old Eh Cray Moo who were swept away while fishing in August 2021—family members said that seven year old Abi Gurung drowned in an earlier incident.  KETV

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The Nebraska Department of Labor reported that March’s unemployment rate was 2.9 percent—down 0.1 percentage points from February but up from 2.6 percent in March 2024. The report showed nonfarm employment increased to 1,054,046 with gains in trade, transportation, leisure, hospitality, mining and construction.  KFAB

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Friday, the Nebraska Supreme Court reversed a lower court ruling and declared LB50's parole reforms constitutional — nearly 1,800 inmates will see earlier or new parole eligibility dates. This decision upholds the law's intent to speed up parole for certain offenders without altering their sentences.  Nebraska Public Media
  • The Nebraska Supreme Court on Friday upheld the Legislature's power to adjust parole eligibility under LB 50 (a law aimed at easing prison overcrowding) by reversing a lower court decision that blocked retroactive changes, and the ruling will let eligible inmates apply for earlier parole as intended by lawmakers.  WOWT
  • After a tornado hit Irvington on April 17, damaging 28 houses, authorities held a briefing at 84th Street and Dutch Hall Road. The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office and local volunteer fire departments increased patrols—saying that no second chances will be given to lawbreakers.  WOWT
