BUSINESS NEWS

  • Todco’s barricades are visible across Omaha for projects like the streetcar upgrade — the company trains staff for uniform setups that reduce vehicle damage and lower taxpayer costs.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Local Scouting America councils removed DEI efforts from youth programs on Feb. 27 in exchange for continued DoD support, discontinuing the Citizenship in Society badge. Jonathan Cartner said the change is meant to keep troop experiences focused for about 6,500 Scouts served by the Mid-America Council in the Omaha metro.  Nebraska News Service
  • UNO’s Morgan Vogel, Ph.D., assistant director at CPAR, has been named a Strategic Data Project Fellow at Harvard+ and will lead a two-year capstone studying Nebraska’s brain drain; his project will combine UNO data with student voices to guide education policy.  University of Nebraska Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Omaha City Council approved $48M in TIF funds for a $330M project that will include a new soccer stadium and mixed-use spaces in Millwork Commons north of Charles Schwab Field. The project awaits state approval for an extra $25M turnback tax to support its completion.  WOWT
  • Aurora’s EMS (expanded from 6 to 15 staff) now faces an 800k annual shortfall and may drop to 11 employees by May as officials consider a sales tax and other measures to sustain the service.  WOWT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • HomeWoven, a local nonprofit, will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on April 23 for an affordable housing project in South Omaha. The project will build three homes at 5449 South 51st Street and provide five affordable homes for income-qualified, first-time buyers.  Grow Omaha
  • The Burlington Place building, a former Burlington Headquarters built in 1879 and saved from demolition during Gene Leahy Mall's development, was renovated into an office complex in 1983 & now features multimedia light shows on its bright white bricks amid the central park area.  Grow Omaha
  • Cizek Construction started steel beam installation for a 4-story, class-A office building at 200 Applied Parkway in Heartwood Preserve west of Boys Town. The 166,050 sqft building will include underground parking, a fitness facility, locker rooms, and more, per the City of Omaha building permit.  Grow Omaha

  • Omaha Baseball beat Kansas State 12-5 at Tointon Family Stadium, with sophomore Nick Riggs hitting a three-run homer to boost their lead. The Mavericks will resume Summit League play in Fargo on Friday.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Tuesday, Bellevue West clinched the girls' Metro Tournament title with a 4-1 win — Papio South secured the boys' championship with a 3-0 victory over Creighton Prep in Omaha.  KETV
