COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents in Omaha can pick up free mulch recycled from storm debris at Al Veys Park—mulch is available from April 12 through April 26 except Sundays and residents must bring their own hand tools and show ID or a utility bill to prove they live in the city.  WOWT
  • A small non-profit in West Omaha runs a free Care Closet that gives new or gently used children’s clothes, shoes, hygiene items, and toys to immigrant, refugee, and struggling families—it served more than 2,000 children last year. The closet is open Wednesday and Saturday or by appointment and the organization will hold its annual fundraising gala on May 1 at the downtown Hilton.  KETV

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Sunday, one person went to a hospital for treatment after suffering smoke inhalation in a house fire in the Happy Hollow neighborhood of north‑central Omaha.  Omaha World-Herald

CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday at 6 p.m., Omaha police went to Florence Tower in North Omaha after hearing gunshots and found one person dead and another injured in an officer-involved shooting—police returned fire and arrested a suspect who is now at a local hospital with serious injuries—as they continue their investigation.  3 News Now
  • Omaha Police said one person was seriously injured after a cutting near 43rd and Spaulding Street a little after 3 a.m. Sunday morning — the victim was taken to Nebraska Medicine and an investigation is ongoing.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Faculty at UNO and UNK received the largest salary raises in decades after union negotiators showed they were underpaid — eligible UNO professors will see nearly a 5% increase for the 2025-26 academic year while UNK faculty will get raises of 4% next year and 3% the following year. Union negotiators gathered data from peer schools to support their claims during lengthy talks that resulted in the new agreements.  Omaha World-Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Meteorologist Caitlin Harvey explained that the Enhanced Fujita scale ranks tornadoes by their damage and wind speeds—EF0 tornadoes with winds of 65 to 85 mph cause minor damage, while EF5 storms exceed 201 mph and cause catastrophic damage. Survey teams review damage after storms to determine the correct rating.  KETV

SPORTS NEWS

  • Creighton added former Miami guard Austin Swartz when he announced his commitment on Instagram Sunday+the transfer joins the Bluejays' latest push for roster depth. The 6 foot 4, 200 pound guard played in 29 games with seven starts for the Hurricanes, averaging 5.9 points and one rebound per game+he has three years of eligibility and one redshirt season available.  WOWT
