  • Omaha’s new Central Library at 72nd and Dodge will open on Sunday, April 19 as Mayor John Ewing cuts the ribbon at the $158 million facility (with a robotic storage system and media tools) that offers residents a modern space for reading, research and events.  The Gateway
  • Omaha entrepreneurs will gather every Wednesday (8:30 a.m.) at Millwork Commons for One Million Cups, where six-minute presentations let business and nonprofit leaders share ideas and build local community.  3 News Now

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Feb. 24, a sinkhole on Pacific Street in Omaha collapsed and swallowed two vehicles & city crews quickly repaired the road while investigating leaks in the loess soil that contributed to over 400 cave-ins reported annually.  WOWT

  • Berkshire Hathaway mailed shareholder badges for its historic annual meeting in Omaha, and shareholders are set to receive them soon.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • On Apr. 5, local artists energized Art Battle Omaha at Culxr House in North Omaha, competing in live painting rounds with a DJ setting the mood and audience votes choosing the finalists. Culxr House founder Marcey Yates said the event launched in 2022 and has grown to offer winners national competition opportunities.  The Omaha News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • UNO student researchers are studying long-term stress in shelter dogs by analyzing 100 strands of hair — which measure cortisol levels — to understand how trauma impacts behavior and adoption. Dog owners who recently adopted are invited to join the study by completing a survey and providing a small hair sample.  The Omaha News
  • The Maverick Store has launched a new Adoption & Insights Portal for course materials in partnership with UNO and Barnes & Noble College. Faculty can use the platform now and must submit adoptions by Thursday, Apr. 23 for Summer and by Thursday, Apr. 30 for Fall to ensure students get the right resources at low cost.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Registration for outdoor swim lessons will open Monday, Apr. 13, at 9 a.m. at select community centers + pools, with sessions set for June 15 to 25 and July 13 to 23 at fees that vary by location.  WOWT

  • Petitioners in Omaha are gathering signatures near post offices and DMVs until July to put a measure on November’s ballot asking for online sports betting legalization. A coalition led by WarHorse & other casino operators aims to collect 300,000 signatures to keep betting revenue in state.  The Omaha News

  • Omaha healthcare providers are integrating AI into gym-based cardiac monitoring to enable faster diagnosis for heart disease patients. The Philips PageWriter TC series uses machine learning to detect heart failure markers in real time and reduce wait times for testing.  The Omaha News
  • Omaha firefighters used a mobile simulation lab in a joint program by the Fire Department + Creighton University, where about 670 individuals trained over the past year to boost their medical skills.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Crews will begin demolishing the vacant Don & Millie's this month to clear the way for a new parking garage on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus, a project that aims to boost parking availability.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Lincoln native Braden Frager re-signed with the Huskers for the 2026-27 season after playing 33 games (11.8 points, 3.8 rebounds) and hit a game-winning shot with 2.2 seconds remaining against Vanderbilt while earning Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year honors.  KETV
