CRIME NEWS
- ➤ Douglas County Sheriff's Office intercepted a shipment of 30 pounds of carfentanil pills—packaged to look like prescription oxycodone—on April 9 in cooperation with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, stopping roughly 150-thousand pills bound for Omaha that could have caused fatal overdoses. KIOS
- ➤ On March 25, 15-year-old Shalamar Davis Jr. was shot near 51st and Emmet Streets while walking with an acquaintance and later died at Nebraska Medical Center, and 19-year-old Christopher Swillie is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault and other firearm offenses — Shalamar’s mother LaToya Henderson recalled his caring nature and expressed confusion over his accused connection with her family. - ➤ The University of Nebraska Omaha will launch a Japanese Minor this fall to meet long-standing student demand by expanding its Japanese language program—adding advanced language and culture courses to support study abroad opportunities and global career paths.— The Omaha News
- ➤ UNO’s College of Communication, Fine Arts and Media celebrated its 20th anniversary this year by looking back on its student newscast that first aired on November 25, 2003 and gave students real newsroom experience with limited resources. The program continues to build essential skills as students report, shoot and edit news packages, with alumni like Samantha Pastorino now earning full-time news jobs+ the capstone remains a key step for aspiring reporters. GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ The Omaha metro area had 1,001,010 residents as of July 1 (a count that puts it in the mid-sized city group), a milestone that brings new challenges for housing and transit. Michael Helgerson of MAPA said local leaders will work together on planning measures to support sustainable growth. The Omaha News
- ➤ The Nebraska Department of Transportation has begun widening Interstate 80 between Q Street and Highway 50 to add a westbound lane from Q Street to Giles Road and an extra lane at the Highway 50 exit — the project also involves bridge repairs in both directions. Traffic will face significant delays as lane capacity drops from three to two until this fall. Grow Omaha
- ➤ Yesterday, the City of Omaha held a ceremonial groundbreaking at Levi Carter Park with Gov. Jim Pillen and Mayor Jean Stothert as it prepares to start construction on a 100,000 square-foot, $45 million sports and activities complex. The facility will include 10 indoor basketball courts that convert to 14 volleyball courts and four artificial turf soccer fields — along with spaces for education, telehealth, and community events — and is funded by a $35 million federal grant and a $10 million state grant, with completion expected in late 2026. - ➤ Officials broke ground yesterday at Levi Carter Park in North Omaha on a $45 million sports complex that will be the city's largest basketball facility with 10 indoor courts, four soccer fields, and a wrestling room. The 114625 square foot facility is funded by a $35 million grant from the U.S. Treasury and $10 million in state COVID-19 funds and will open in fall to host regional tournaments and community programs.
