EDUCATION NEWS

  • Hundreds of engineering students from 17 universities and six states raced concrete canoes Friday afternoon at Holmes Lake Park as part of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Mid-America Student Symposium hosted by University of Nebraska–Lincoln and University of Nebraska-Omaha College of Engineering — the contest featured sprint and slalom races.  WOWT
  • Nebraska’s $9 million education funding planned for literacy programs is at risk after the U.S. Department of Education changed the deadline for using the funds; state officials say they are considering their next steps.  Omaha World-Herald

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • During Earth Month, campus groups at UNO held and are planning events to promote sustainability; Durango’s Outfitters hosted an Earth Month pop-up on April 1 & SustainUNO tabulated at the Milo Bail Student Center on April 3 while scheduling an up-cycling event on April 15 and a free seed packet giveaway at the Elmwood Earth Day event on April 26. The Office of Sustainability will soon launch a Behind the Bins tour of the First Star Recycling Facility to show how recycling is processed.  The Gateway

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State officials are continuing the search at the Genoa U.S. Indian Industrial Boarding School as the Interior Department reviews a program started under President Biden—archaeologists have not yet found the graves of many children—and local tribal leaders hope to get closure. The search uses state and local teams while federal leaders decide what to do next.  Nebraska Public Media
  • Today in Bellevue high school students learned about the service academy application process and congressional nominations from senators, congressmen, and representatives from the U.S. Military — Coast Guard, Merchant Marine, Naval, and Air Force Academies. Additional events are planned in Norfolk, North Platte, Omaha, Grand Island, and Lincoln with a virtual session scheduled for July.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Nebraska Hospital Association paused its 12-month opioid reduction program after federal funding was cut last March, ending its strategy to lower opioid prescriptions statewide. Hospitals continued to use non-opioid methods for pain management while a federal court temporarily blocked the rescission of grant funds—leaving the program on hold until a final decision is made.  WOWT

  • Juwan Gary led Nebraska to a 79-69 win over Boise State in the College Basketball Crown semifinal at T-Mobile Arena on Saturday—he scored 21 points with nine rebounds and three blocks to help the Cornhuskers gain and hold the lead. The team will play today against the winner of the Villanova and UCF game in the inaugural championship contest.  WOWT
  • Creighton's Ryan Kalkbrenner—standing 7-foot-1 and leading the Big East in blocked shots, rebounds and field goal percentage—was named the Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Center of the Year by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Saturday. He ended his college career as one of the school's top players and earned many honors during his time with the Bluejays.  KETV
