  • Metro Community College’s 180 Reentry Assistance Program celebrates 10 years of helping formerly incarcerated individuals rebuild their lives in Omaha. The program offers job training and mentoring to over 160 students per quarter and plans to expand its services + opportunities for a fresh start.  KETV
  • Victory Boxing Club in South Omaha pairs boxing with Christian values to help youth build discipline and focus — a program that blends training with faith on a daily basis.  The Omaha News
  • Outlook Enrichment in Omaha offers group events for residents with vision loss to join activities and feel supported. Volunteers & community members provide guidance to help participants connect and enjoy their experiences.  The Omaha News

CULTURE NEWS

  • UNO kicked off APIDA Heritage Month with APIDA Palooza on Wednesday, April 1 at Milo Bail Student Center Ballroom. Students sampled diverse foods, got henna art and learned taiko drumming and dragon dance steps as part of the university's cultural celebration.  The Gateway
  • Omaha Community Playhouse removed its Director of Social Impact, DeAnna Williams, prompting strong social media reactions including viral videos during a production. The playhouse said the role was eliminated for budget reasons and that DEIA duties will now be shared among the current staff.  The Omaha News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Omaha rideshare drivers are coping with record-high fuel prices ($3 to $4) by choosing cheaper fill-ups in Council Bluffs and adjusting routes due to city construction. They say these challenges are shrinking their take-home income.  3 News Now
  • Rising diesel prices are pushing up costs for truckers statewide, with industry leaders warning that fuel surcharges will pass higher prices to local stores. Truck drivers reported rapid expense increases, and smaller carriers may feel the impact first (insiders expect costs to move through the supply chain).  The Omaha News

  • Alex Brewer, who began his robotics journey with teacher Ryan Higgins at Abraham Lincoln High School, now works as a NASA software engineer preventing fuel leaks on Artemis II & his achievement inspires students to see failure as a step toward success.  KETV

  • The rain helped river access parks open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily as drought conditions leave water levels unpredictable. Papio NRD monitors Elkhorn Crossing, Graske Crossing, Platte River Landing and West Maple Road site, with parks open through Nov. 1.  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • The DEA will host the 30th National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, April 25 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 130 sites in our area, offering residents a safe way to dispose of expired prescriptions (liquid products must remain in their original container).  KFAB
  • Make-A-Wish Nebraska granted 8-year-old Connor Doeden, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, his wish with a hot tub designed to relieve his muscle pain; his family said the gift brings him comfort. The nonprofit will hold its Blue Jean Ball on Saturday, Apr. 25 to benefit critically ill kids.  WOWT
