COMMUNITY NEWS

  • An Omaha expert said many people choose to stay outdoors because fears from the pandemic along with mental health and addiction issues make shelters less appealing. A Douglas County Sheriff’s Community Action Team visited a large camp near 18th and Grant Street after neighbors complained about noise, garbage and open burns—offering free rides to shelters and urging more affordable housing and mental healthcare.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Omaha's Kaneko announced that free admission will be offered for its art exhibits through the end of the year thanks to an anonymous donation—exhibits include large clay art, colorful fabrics, and sculptures while an indigo workshop and a special performance are planned for later this month.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A massive sinkhole on 16th Street in downtown Omaha has remained unrepaired for three months, forcing pedestrians into traffic and causing injuries. Local experts say the incident shows Omaha’s aging infrastructure—bridges and roads built in the mid-1900s are now exceeding their design lifespan while a $150 million annual funding gap leaves needed repairs at risk.  The Omaha News
  • Unofficial results from Omaha's city primary show that mayoral candidates Jean Stothert and John Ewing moved on to the general election+ Mike McDonnell gave up his race Tuesday after 10 p.m. In the city council race, Ben Gray and LaVonya Goodwin led in District 2.  WOWT
  • In Omaha’s District 2 City Council race, unofficial counts show former Councilman Ben Gray captured 28% of votes among nine candidates while incumbent Juanita Johnson trails challenger LaVonya Goodwin by less than 1%—officials said counting 529 early ballots and 44 provisional ballots will continue and the race may be decided tomorrow.  WOWT
  • Jean Stothert and John Ewing advanced to the general election in Omaha's mayoral race after unofficial primary results confirmed their wins, and both are now preparing for the next contest.  WOWT

  • Brice Williams scored 28 points as Nebraska beat Georgetown 81-69 on Wednesday, helping the Cornhuskers secure their win. The team will face Boise State in the semifinals Saturday — a key step in their season.  WOWT
