COMMUNITY NEWS

  • KETV hosted a telethon on Apr. 1 that raised $190,987 for cattle producers affected by wildfires in central and western Nebraska, with all funds going to the Nebraska Cattlemen Disaster Relief Fund.  KETV
  • Yesterday, Catholic Charities of Omaha celebrated its 100th anniversary at the St. Martin de Porres Center, where Mayor John Ewing Jr. presented a proclamation recognizing a century of service that supports more than 325,000 residents with food, shelter, and behavioral health services.  KETV

  • Too Good to Go launched in Omaha on March 18, teaming up with local restaurants, cafes and grocery stores to reduce food waste (Stories Coffee reported selling its $18 surprise bags priced at $5.99 in under 10 minutes). Locals are encouraged to turn on app notifications for fresh deals.  KETV

CULTURE NEWS

  • A historic church in Bellevue, built in 1856 and restored in 1976 for community events, shows 170 years of original stained glass windows and floors cut by hand, and it has a fountain donated by the DAR & a buried time capsule.  WOWT

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Omaha travel agents say recent violence in Puerto Vallarta has led many customers to cancel or change trips, dropping bookings by about 20 to 25 percent. Local resort workers report a 60 to 70 percent decline in visitors that is impacting local business.  The Omaha News
  • Business owners along the streetcar route face daily impacts from construction as city officials work to keep streets open and sidewalks accessible. Efforts to manage disruptions have been adjusted and Shamrock Development CEO Mike Moylan said the transit project will boost downtown growth from the med center to downtown.  Grow Omaha

  • UNO celebrated local student Zach Venn for earning the system’s only Goldwater Scholarship on April 1, recognizing his strong research in Chemistry and setting him on track to join an MD/PhD program after his 2027 graduation.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Nebraska native Allison Porter Carpenter, a first-generation UNL alumna, works with NASA's Lunar Architecture Team testing the Orion spacecraft for the Artemis II mission, which launched April 1. Her journey, supported by local mentors and research experiences, inspires Nebraska students to aim high in human spaceflight.  WOWT
  • Jim Reese, a UNO alum and author, shared his experiences teaching creative writing to incarcerated individuals with English students on Monday, Mar. 30 at the Milo Bail Student Center Dodge rooms. He read excerpts from his eight published nonfiction books while explaining how writing helps process trauma.  The Gateway

  • Carlos Godinez, a well-known restaurateur who built his business since arriving as a child, was ordered deported by an Omaha immigration judge Tuesday after his misdemeanor record came under scrutiny, and although over 2,500 community members showed support, he was taken into custody + now faces starting over in Guatemala.  Nebraska Examiner
