COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A public visitation to honor fallen Bellevue soldier Master Sgt. Noah Tietjens was held Friday in Bellevue as community members gathered to pay their respects.  WOWT
  • At the Young Professionals Summit in Omaha, Charita Dailey (of Change of Omaha) received the Change Maker award as she encouraged entrepreneurs to overcome anxiety and take smart risks, while Greater Omaha Chamber official Merrick Brtek and CEO Laurel Oetken stressed bold efforts can create career opportunities.  KETV
  • Child Saving Institute will host its 29th annual Cabaret fundraiser on April 10 at CHI Health Center in Omaha to support its services for children and families. Dinner, cocktails and a live auction (tickets cost $250 per person, tables start at $2,500, with sales closing March 30) will be offered.  WOWT
  • A public visitation honoring fallen Master Sgt. Noah Tietjens is set for Friday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Forest Lawn Funeral Home (7909 Mormon Bridge Rd), and a private funeral is scheduled for Saturday at Bellevue Christian Center.  WOWT
  • Omaha-based Salvation Army crews are sending a disaster relief team to Hyannis after the evacuation order was lifted. The team will provide food + water for firefighters and local families affected by nearby wildfires.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Omaha offers a full weekend of family and arts events, including the fifth annual Eggstravaganza at Heartwood Park (noon to 3 p.m. Saturday) with egg hunts and bounce houses, the Pickle Party at Midtown Crossing later Saturday, and SIX the Musical at the Orpheum Theater with shows through Sunday.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Gretna East senior Madeline Petrick was named Nebraska’s Student Journalist of the Year. The soon-to-be Boston University freshman will compete for national recognition in Minneapolis in April.  WOWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • 79-year-old conservationist George Archibald (co-founder of the International Crane Foundation) stayed a month in Nebraska this March to watch the sandhill crane migration along the Platte River. He said he will keep protecting the birds as long as he is able.  WOWT
  • Nebraska Game and Parks Commission reminds visitors that campfires are banned at state park areas and wildlife management areas during the extended burn ban now in effect through April 10. Camp stoves using liquid or gas fuel are allowed+ they help reduce wildfire risks.  KFAB
  • Papio NRD will open Elkhorn and Platte River access parks on April 1; the sites include Elkhorn Crossing (252nd & Bennington Road) and Platte River Landing near Highway 64 Bridge. They will be open until Nov. 1 from 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. though high river flows may trigger closures.  KFAB

  • Eppley Airfield accepts gift card donations (up to $20) for TSA agents through drop boxes placed before and after checkpoints. Only cards from select grocery or gas vendors are allowed, and cash or prepaid cards are not accepted.  WOWT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Located along 72nd (Dodge), Okra African Grill serves authentic African dishes including fufu, ablo, jellof rice, and peanut butter chicken, along with Chef Nina's homemade lemonades. The restaurant brings a fresh taste of African cuisine to local diners today.  KETV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Four properties (3612 Grand Ave, 4940 North 35th St, 4931 North 35th St, 3183 Grand Ave) from the Omaha Municipal Land Bank are available for affordable housing development in north Omaha as part of its Shovel-Ready Effort.  Grow Omaha
  • Opus has started construction on a new logistics building at 13760 Highway 370 near Amazon's regional distribution center in Papillion. The 168,486 sqft facility features 32-foot ceilings, 10 dock doors and ample parking on a 12-acre site.  Grow Omaha
