COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Omaha firefighters hosted their annual steak fry (a tradition spanning over 70 years) to raise funds for families affected by muscular dystrophy and support the Fill the Boot program. Dinner featuring a rib eye, baked potato, and green beans was served until 7 p.m. at the union hall on 60th and Grover.  KETV
  • The Salvation Army has launched phase one of its food drive and is accepting online donations until March 26 to help neighbors in need. An in-person drive at two locations will also occur on March 26 to provide free meals and pantry bags at Burrows Center and North Corps.  WOWT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Construction has begun on the new Baker's Marketplace store northwest of 204th & Q Street; the 123,000 sqft site, 55,000 sqft larger than typical Baker's locations and featuring a fuel center, will employ more than 300 people.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Step Up Omaha will offer summer jobs, training & internships to teenagers aged 14 to 21 from June 2 to July 31, with applications accepted until March 16. The program has supported 8,000 young people over 15 years.  KFAB
  • UNMC signed on to a federal effort that requires at least 40 hours of nutrition education in the curriculum, and it will add clinical training this fall. University leaders, who have integrated these lessons for more than five years, said the move aims to enhance patient care in Nebraska.  Nebraska Public Media

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Thursday, the area endured high winds and a red flag warning for fire danger from noon until 9 p.m., while forecasts call for gusts over 50 mph with mixed precipitation on Sunday and below-zero wind chills on Monday — setting up a rollercoaster weekend.  KETV
  • A 2.5 magnitude quake shook Cowles on Thursday, Mar. 12 at 6 a.m.—the second tremor this month after a 4.1 hit was felt in areas including Omaha. There have been no reports of damage or injuries.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Police Chief Todd Schmaderer was honored by the Omaha Press Club as the 185th Face on the Ballroom Floor today. He marked 30 years in law enforcement (joining in 1996) and is now the nation's longest-serving active police chief.  WOWT
  • UNO’s Student Government Association and IndivisibleNE set up voter registration tables at Milo Bail Student Center and Barbara Weitz Community Engagement Center on Tuesday and Wednesday to help students register ahead of the Nebraska primaries in May.  The Gateway

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction is underway on six townhouses at the southwest corner of 29th & Jackson Street, just north of Supermercado Nuestra Familia and along the west side of I-480. The units will be completed by the end of this year and will feature a large exterior mural on the east side.  Grow Omaha
  • Two affordable senior homes nearing 1,000 sqft each are set to be built on Corby Street in Benson using energy-efficient structural insulated panels, with construction finishing in August. Partners for a Livable Omaha worked with Spark Capital and UNL experts to design aging-friendly homes that lower heating and cooling costs.  KETV

  • Nebraska will play in the Big Ten Tournament today at the United Center in Chicago as head coach Fred Hoiberg, who played for the Bulls, leads the Huskers as a No. 2 seed—his son Sam anchors one of the top defenses in the conference.  KETV
