COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Supporters for Women's History Month will gather for the Omaha Women's Day March today from 2-5 p.m. starting at City Hall at 1819 Farnam St (the League of Women Voters of Greater Omaha is participating).  WOWT
  • Local students are planning to renovate Malcolm X’s birthplace (a neglected part of Omaha history) by designing an amphitheater and botanical garden. The project, which began as a 1999 school initiative, is set to break ground soon as additional funding is secured.  KETV
  • Union Omaha plans a mixed-use Stadium District on a 25-acre lot in north downtown. City Council will review its TIF redevelopment plan at a public hearing on April 7 to fund a project that will create 200 jobs and open the stadium in 2028.  KETV
  • This month, Youth Emergency Services and Together Inc. received $1 million in grants to fund rapid rehousing programs for youth (16 to 24) and will soon start helping them find new homes amid rising homelessness.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Country music superstar Thomas Rhett will perform at CHI Health Center in Omaha on Oct. 24 as the final stop of his tour; presale tickets are available March 11 at 10 a.m. and general tickets start March 13 at 10 a.m.  KETV

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Parents in Papillion La Vista pushed the school board at Monday night's meeting to expand busing for secondary students so that working and military families can have safe transport. The board is reviewing options that may cost ($1M) per year to extend middle school coverage.  3 News Now
  • UNO’s Glacier Creek Preserve is a 525-acre tallgrass prairie field station located 25 minutes away, where UNO science classes + community visitors learn about prairie restoration and conservation.   • Community members and business leaders are watching empty storefronts in Florence as Burger King and grocery stores have closed over recent years, reducing foot traffic for remaining shops.
