  • An Elkhorn family received an email from the Nebraska Humane Society saying their cat Muffy, lost for 15 years, has turned up — a welcome reunion after years of worry.  Omaha World-Herald

  • Victoria Mbachu, a former Army officer — now an entrepreneur — started Parking Area Maintenance in Omaha to offer asphalt and concrete services and provide training and second-chance hiring for workers impacted by the justice system.  Grow Omaha
  • D.R. Horton, the nation’s largest homebuilder by volume, will purchase Omaha-based Celebrity Homes’ 1,200 lots & floor plans while Celebrity Homes finishes current houses and remains to honor warranties; the deal will expand local housing efforts.  Grow Omaha

CULTURE NEWS

  • Yesterday, March 7, Grow Omaha’s Lightning Round recapped local news as Bellevue welcomed its first Pollo Feliz — west Omaha saw Taqueria Tijuana’s expansion, Little Bohemia opened a new comedy theater, and Johnny’s Cafe earned a James Beard America’s Classics honor.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At the UNO SGA meeting on Thursday at Mammel Hall, students and staff voiced concerns over the sudden closure of the UNO Child Care Center. Critics noted the center ran at 66% capacity while President Drew Leisy promised to seek solutions (employees were given 89 days to find new jobs).  The Gateway
  • The Student Government Association has proposed seven bylaw changes for the next academic year, including reducing Senate seats from 28 to 26. A public town hall will be held Friday, March 13 at 1 p.m. via Zoom for student feedback before the final Senate vote.  The Gateway

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • U.S. and state leaders attended the dignified transfer of six soldiers at Dover Air Force Base on Saturday, honoring those killed in Kuwait (including Nebraska native Sgt. First Class Noah Tietjens). Lawmakers spoke of their gratitude toward service families and the soldiers’ sacrifice.  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • On March 7, Nebraska Medicine opened its new biocontainment unit for treating contagious diseases like smallpox and anthrax. The facility aims to boost local emergency response efforts + improve patient care.  WOWT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Skylark Development is constructing Block 38 apartments on the southwest corner of 38th Avenue & Dodge Street in Blackstone, with two levels of indoor parking and five levels of units. Crews are nearing the start of the third level as part of the 22 million project offering 131 units along the ORBT line.  Grow Omaha

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bennington Badgers completed an undefeated season today by defeating Gretna East (49-38) to win their first Class B girls basketball crown. Coach John O’Connor said the team focused on one game at a time.  WOWT
  • Creighton men's basketball earned a No. 5 seed in the Big East Tournament and will face Seton Hall on March 12 at 1:30 p.m. in Madison Square Garden after earning a bye in the quarterfinals with Butler’s win at DePaul. The Bluejays were 15-16 this season.  KETV
  • Creighton women's basketball beat Marquette 57-44 in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals on Saturday — the Jays will face No. 1 UConn today at 1:30 p.m. in the semifinals.  KETV
  • The Nebraska Red Dawgs are hosting the Dawg Pound Showdown this weekend + seven teams from across state and beyond will compete at Papillion La Vista High School, with prep and varsity championships scheduled for today at 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., respectively.  WOWT
  • LOVB Nebraska from Omaha swept LOVB Salt Lake in Grand Island as Jordan Larson led with 14 kills and 13 digs in a three-set win with scores of 29-27, 25-16 and 25-22, earning a standing ovation from the crowd.  WOWT
