  • Yates Illuminates hosts a March 14 free Rain Barrel Giveaway while federal funds aid four youth homelessness projects. ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • Pacific Street in midtown reopened to traffic around 2 p.m. Thursday after a sinkhole swallowed two vehicles eight days ago.  Omaha World-Herald

CULTURE NEWS

  • KETV released a guide for St. Patrick’s Day events in Omaha, featuring a corned beef feast near 84th and Center on Mar. 15 (11 a.m.–7 p.m.), a speed dating event on Mar. 14 at Culxr House, 5K/10K at Miller’s Landing, and a parade on Mar. 14 at 16th and Capitol.  KETV
  • On March 5, 1857, Omaha’s first mayor Jesse Lowe was sworn in, marking a milestone in the city's development. During his term, he named the city after the Omaha tribe, helped survey the area, and built the bank that later evolved into the United States National Bank.  WOWT

  • Pat Kelley at UNO College of Information Science & Technology was named Employee of the Month for February 2026. He was honored for his technical leadership and detail-oriented support of faculty, staff, and students.  University of Nebraska Omaha

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Drought Monitor shows worsening drought conditions as northeast Nebraska enters the red zone for the fifth week, with Omaha receiving only 14% of its normal moisture in the past six months. Meteorologist Taylor Nicolaisen said expected rain from March through June could help ease the local drought.  Nebraska Public Media

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The first batch of rails for the Omaha streetcar was delivered Thursday, marking a key step toward the development of the city transit project. Officials say the delivery supports ongoing work on the new public transportation system.  WOWT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Crews have begun installing the steel structure to support the Mutual of Omaha tower's crown, advancing topping out for the 677 ft (44-story) building at the block bounded by 14th, 15th, Douglas and Farnam streets. The skyscraper will have office space and employee amenities while crews complete the exterior finish.  Grow Omaha
