  • The Barstool Open fundraiser is raising money for UCP Nebraska in Omaha’s Old Market to support services for children with cerebral palsy (one in 345 children is diagnosed with the condition). The event aims to boost community spirit through local athletic activities.  WOWT
  • Special Olympics Nebraska will host the Polar Plunge on Saturday at Holmes Lake to raise funds for the organization as dozens plunge into cold water for a good cause + supporting local athletes.  WOWT
  • Participants plunged into freezing water at Holmes Lake on Saturday to support Special Olympics Nebraska — the event raised funds through collected pledges and showcased local spirit.  WOWT

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Saturday morning, firefighters quickly contained an electrical malfunction fire in a North Omaha home near 27th and Crown Point avenues around 11:45 a.m. (rescued an unharmed dog and kept residents safe) while damages are estimated at about $45,000.  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • Omaha native civil rights leader Malcolm X was assassinated in New York City on Feb. 21, 1965 while addressing an Organization of Afro-American Unity event, marking a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement.  WOWT
  • Local leaders (in an interview) discussed the Tenaska Center for Arts and its role in boosting Omaha’s creative scene today.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Cedric Cooper, a Benson High alumnus (who previously held leadership roles in Lincoln and Wyoming), is set to become the new principal at his alma mater in Omaha.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Barry Thomas has been named the new principal at Omaha Northwest High School and is eager to lead the school and serve a community he has long been part of.  Omaha World-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHI Health in Omaha uses a new grant from the Beryl Institute to launch a five-week training program that lets employees & volunteers bring therapy dogs to work to ease stress, and nurse Joyce Miller Andersen hopes her dog Peaches will boost staff morale.  KETV

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Saturday, Omaha's hockey team lost game two, 6-3 to Arizona State in Tempe after Jérémy Loranger assisted on all three goals including the tying goal with 14:08 left in regulation. Senior Tyler Rollwagen scored two power-play goals and Omaha will play its final series against Miami (Ohio) next weekend.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • At the state wrestling championships this weekend, Skutt Catholic and Creighton Prep secured multiple titles at the Parade of Champions in Omaha. Tyler Harrill became a four time state champion by pinning his opponent early while Khy'ree Thomas Calloway celebrated his 150th career win.  KETV
  • Nebraska men's basketball won 87–64 over Penn State on Saturday at Pinnacle Bank Arena, with Pryce Sandfort scoring 24 points—helping the Huskers secure a decisive victory. They will host Maryland Wednesday at 6 p.m.  KETV
