COMMUNITY NEWS

  • A snow storm delayed Omaha’s trash collection when Wasteline skipped service on Friday, and leftover snow slowed morning travel in the metro area.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The city announced closures for streetcar construction beginning Mon., Feb. 23. 15th St north of Farnam will be closed for water main work for two to three weeks, and Farnam (between 13th and 15th) and 38th Ave at Farnam will have lane and parking restrictions with track work ending 2026.  KETV
  • Nebraska now allows riders 21+ to ride without helmets if they complete a certified safety course and wear proper eye protection; highway safety officials report that since the law change two years ago, fatality numbers have dipped but injuries have risen among those not wearing helmets.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • CHI Health will build a central kitchen in North Omaha that will prepare thousands of meals daily for patients at its hospitals and in southwest Iowa. The project will finish in about 18 months — a welcome boost to local meal services.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Two new smartphone apps in Omaha are designed to help save lives during heart events and work without requiring CPR training. The tools will soon be available for anyone in need of quick emergency assistance.  WOWT

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Benjamin's opened in December at 3623 N 129th St and serves classic American comfort food with South American influences, offering dishes like southwest eggrolls, chicken and vodka sauce gnocchi, and pizzagna.  KETV

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction began on the Digs Apartments at 31st & Mary Street south of The Mill on Leavenworth coffee shop. The project includes two 4-story buildings with 188 apartment units, a clubhouse, pool, patio and indoor parking, and received $4.1 million in TIF for its $46 million budget.  Grow Omaha

SPORTS NEWS

  • On Friday at CHI Health Center, two wrestlers from Creighton Prep and Skutt Catholic vied for a fourth state title as both schools advanced 11 athletes to the semifinals. Zaiyahn Ornelas and Tyler Harrill competed with semis beginning at 6 p.m. (KETV reported live downtown).  KETV
  • After Nebraska’s loss to Iowa on Feb. 17, coach Fred Hoiberg described how a fan rushed him with a cell phone during the handshake line, noting his pacemaker (2024) makes such contacts risky. The Huskers will face Penn State today at 1 p.m. CT.  WOWT
  • Creighton beat No.5 UConn on Friday, Feb.20 at its home court (in Omaha), and the Huskers will play Penn State in an upcoming game.  WOWT
