COMMUNITY NEWS

  • UNO students in a Gerontology class partnered with older adults to craft 1,800 Valentine’s Day cards that will soon be delivered to local nursing homes, strengthening bonds across generations.  University of Nebraska Omaha

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Jeff Gorat’s new deli in Elkhorn serves made-to-order sandwiches and local products. The deli, located at 203rd and West Dodge Road, offers a busy lunch spot with a mix of deli classics and curated bodega finds (featuring local ingredients).  Flatwater Free Press
  • Omaha Steaks announced it will consolidate operations by closing its restaurant supply division while expanding delivery and launching 12+ new retail stores later this year; local restaurants reported scrambling after the change on Tuesday.  WOWT
  • Shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday, a basement fire damaged Stella's Bar and Grill in Bellevue, forcing the restaurant to close until further notice (according to the Bellevue Fire Department).  WOWT

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Boiler Room, an Old Market restaurant, transforms a raw brick warehouse into a dining destination with a farm-to-table menu and inventive cocktails (including a hot winter cocktail). Established in 2009, it blends elegant plating with local Midwestern charm.  Grow Omaha
  • Trimble Mansion in North Omaha, a former Green Book hotel, is now a protected historical site with state, city & national certification. The North Omaha Visitor’s Center will soon add stops to historic Green Book locations as the Durham Museum’s Green Book exhibit remains open this month.  WOWT
  • Artist Drew Davies is collecting Dundee neighborhood artifacts to create a commemorative poster celebrating the area's creative past; community members can bring objects to Lola's on Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. or email photos to be included in the project.  3 News Now

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Student interns at UNO help athletes during practices and injury recovery at Sapp Field House and Health Science Collaborative. The program uses a 360-degree approach to boost athletic performance + mental well-being.  University of Nebraska Omaha

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, five Omaha entities received part of $7 million in state grants from the Department of Water, Energy and Environment to support waste and litter reduction projects; the city got $375,069 for a hazardous waste facility and $27,970 for scrap tire collection, while nonprofits and businesses received additional funds.  WOWT

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • At its Feb. 10 meeting, the Douglas County Board honored Capt. Patrick West for nearly 36 years of service in Corrections and extended condolences to his wife. The board also recognized retiring employee Joseph Godek and discussed budget updates, including denying a late tax exemption request for a local church.  Flatwater Free Press

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Asics Presidents’ Day Classic volleyball tournament will take place from Feb. 13-16 in Omaha, drawing an estimated 13,000 athletes, families, and college coaches to CHI Health Center Omaha and other venues. Local hotels, restaurants, and sports spots expect a boost in business with 570 teams competing.  Grow Omaha
  • Nebraska football announced that its spring game will take place at Memorial Stadium on March 28 with kickoff at 11 a.m. — tickets will go on sale Feb. 19 starting at $5, rising to $10 until March 27 before costing $20 on game day.  KETV
