CULTURE NEWS

  • Nick Nolte, an award-winning actor born in Omaha on Feb. 8, 1941, made his mark in local theater before his breakout role in the miniseries Rich Man, Poor Man (earning a Primetime Emmy and a Golden Globe) launched his film career.  WOWT

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Omaha has seen only 6.5 inches of snow so far this winter (well below the 16-inch average) amid a regional snow drought affecting the Rockies. Reduced runoff may strain the Platte River and local reservoirs later this summer.  3 News Now

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Douglas County Health Department warned that 196 restaurants with unrenewed food and drink permits will be shut down starting Feb. 16 if they do not act promptly. Affected businesses must call the department to avoid fines and service interruption.  WOWT

SPORTS NEWS

  • An athlete with Omaha ties looked back on his Winter Olympics experience and cheered on another competitor who took a similar path. His reflections underscored community pride and the spirit of local achievement.  WOWT
  • Creighton extended its win streak with an overtime victory over Marquette on Feb. 8; Isaac Traudt scored 18 points and Nik Graves hit a game-winning three-pointer with 2.5 seconds left.  WOWT
  • On Saturday at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds in Kearney, Creighton Prep won the Class A dual wrestling title by beating Kearney 56 to 16 and Omaha Skutt Catholic repeated as Class B champion by defeating Bennington 50 to 25 with nine individual wins.  WOWT
  • On Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 8), Nebraskans drove to an Iowa exit ramp to place sports bets as heavier parking signaled a trend of seeking wagering options not offered at home.  WOWT
