  • UNO’s Dance Marathon hosted 'A night at The Oscar’s' on Jan. 31 to celebrate local support with dinner, a raffle, dancing plus music that raised funds for Children's Nebraska and Project Austin. The nonprofit will host its annual OMAthon on Apr. 11 to support children.  The Gateway

  • The Greater Omaha Chamber has named Paul West as board chair for 2026 and David E. Cota as board chair for 2027 at a recent meeting. West and Cota will guide the chamber's strategy and community partnerships as the region continues to grow.  Grow Omaha

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Census data for the past five years through 2024 shows Nebraska's net loss of adults with bachelor's degrees fell from 4,610 to 3,075 + experts note that the largest outflow now comes from 30-to-34-year-olds who feel limited by few growth options.  Grow Omaha
  • Creighton University's report shows the Mid-America Business Conditions Index rose from 47.6 in December to 49.6 while remaining below growth neutral (the fourth occurrence in five months), signaling weak regional economic performance.  Grow Omaha

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Omaha Public Schools broke records last school year as more students took AP + dual-enrollment courses while the district expanded its college-level offerings.  Omaha World-Herald
  • UNeMed is hosting its Back-o-the-Napkin contest for UNO and UNMC faculty, staff and students to submit innovations in medical devices, AI and research tools—with entries due March 6. Top pitches will be judged on novelty and market potential and will win support including prototyping and feasibility testing.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • A UNO team is developing AI-powered defenses to protect drones from GPS spoofing used in agriculture and public safety. The NSF funded project began Oct. 1 and will test its methods at the MM-AIR testbed, train students this spring + share results in summer.  University of Nebraska Omaha

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • On Groundhog Day, Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter (after seeing his shadow at Gobbler’s Knob) while Omaha's Weather Leader reviewed a decade of data (recording about 35% accuracy). The report offers a mixed view of the historic forecast.  KETV

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Feb. 2, 1857, Omaha’s charter was approved and signed into law, establishing a mayor council form of government. This historic milestone set the stage for the first city election and council meeting later that year.  WOWT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Construction of the Mutual of Omaha Tower at 14th and Farnam in downtown remains on track as the building nears its planned height of 677 feet (shear core complete) and crews will finish interior and exterior work this fall.  WOWT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Omaha’s softball team, known for its deep experience, will open its season Friday at the UNI-Dome Tournament in Cedar Falls. Coach Mike Heard said the 22 player roster, which includes returning starters and new transfers, is poised for a tough pre-conference season — a sign of championship pedigree.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Head coach Cliff Cisar revealed the 2026 outdoor track and field schedule with the Mavericks debuting in Kearney on March 28, competing in Lincoln on April 3 + at Drake on April 10, and concluding in Fargo for the Summit League Championships from May 14 to May 16.  University of Nebraska Omaha
