COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Due to expected frigid weather from today through Monday, Omaha Salvation Army will open warming centers to provide shelter and support to residents. The centers will offer essential services for neighbors in need.  WOWT
  • The Woollen quadruplets, born with less than a 4% chance of survival, will celebrate their 18th birthday next month with a party at Spring City Indoor Trampoline Park in Grand Island. They make up 20% of the Wilcox-Hildreth senior class and are planning for college.  Flatwater Free Press
  • The Omaha Polar Plunge is set for Saturday, Feb. 14 at Lake Zorinsky where participants will jump into icy water to support Special Olympics Nebraska athletes. Check-in begins at 9:30 a.m. with a post-plunge party at Brewsky’s Food & Spirits.  KETV

  • El Muchacho Alegre is renovating the former On the Border building at 8810 South 71st Plaza in the Shoppes at Market Pointe for its new Papillion restaurant. The restaurant will join the brand’s other local locations (6222 North 72nd Street and 10177 South 168th Avenue).  Grow Omaha
  • A second Yoshitomo restaurant will open in downtown Omaha following a building permit to remodel 1105 Harney Street in the Old Market (west of Jams American Grill, formerly Mouth of the South). The sushi chain, led by James Beard Award finalist David Utterback, plans to expand its local presence.  Grow Omaha

  • St. Cecilia Cathedral’s 41st annual Flower Festival is underway through Sunday, showcasing floral designs that honor bees and a centerpiece built with a car hubcap + chicken wire + decorative accents.  KETV

  • A new report from the Nonprofit Association of the Midlands finds that Nebraska nonprofits generated $23.1 billion in revenue in 2023 as 5,483 (501(c)) organizations filed IRS Form 990, highlighting their vital role in our community.  Grow Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, the University of Nebraska Board of Regents installed an interim board for Nebraska Medicine following a review that raised governance concerns; Clarkson Regional Health Services joined in filing incorporation amendments, setting the stage for continued quality care as a new physician-led board is planned for the future.  KFAB
  • On Wednesday night, the Douglas County Sheriff's Office opened its climate-controlled foyer as an emergency warming shelter for homeless individuals, families, and their pets during the cold snap (featuring donated supplies and sleeping bags) and it will remain open 24/7.  3 News Now

  • A Nebraska wide receiver commit, Tay Ellis (a four-star prospect), will transfer to Millard South for his senior year, joining quarterback commit Trae Taylor who announced his move on Wednesday.
