- ➤ GameStop closed its Papillion store at 8540 South 71st Plaza this past Thursday + a yet-to-be-announced Mexican restaurant will open at 8810 South 71st Plaza as renovations begin at The Shoppes at Market Pointe. Grow Omaha
- ➤ Omaha Bagel Co. will open its first physical location at 5423 Leavenworth Street later spring or early summer. The bakery began in 2022 as an in-home business and now occupies the building that once housed Tasty Pizza + it looks to bring fresh bagels to the neighborhood. Grow Omaha
ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Creighton University reports its Rural Mainstreet Index reached 52.0 in January (up from 50.1 in December), the highest reading since July 2023 based on a survey of bank CEOs from a 10-state region reliant on agriculture and energy. The index scale of 0 to 100 marks 50 as neutral. Grow Omaha
FINANCE NEWS
- ➤ On Jan. 18, 1856, the Bank of Florence was chartered as Nebraska’s first bank by the Iowa firm Cook and Sargent, marking a key moment in Florence’s financial history. The bank later failed in 1859, and a second Bank of Florence opened in 1904. WOWT
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Downtown Omaha will see three streets close today for water and sewer work on the streetcar project, with Farnam blocked for two weeks plus 12th and 16th closed for a month. Drivers are advised to use alternate routes and nearby parking as local access remains open. WOWT
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ The City approved a building permit for Bryan Health’s 14.6-acre Elkhorn Campus in the Privada subdivision southwest of 204th & West Center Road, where two medical office buildings totaling 139,538 sqft will be built with patient care beginning in 2027. Grow Omaha
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Omaha Women's Tennis dropped both matches at Nebraska on Sunday, with the doubles team recording its first win in team history. The Mavericks will host Concordia & Sioux Falls at Miracle Hill Tennis Center on Friday, Jan. 23 starting at 11 a.m. CT. University of Nebraska Omaha
- ➤ Omaha men’s and women’s Swimming and Diving swept Saint Louis at the Simon Recreation Center Jan. 16–17, scoring 197 and 245 points respectively, plus the wins extend their strong season with consecutive victories. University of Nebraska Omaha
- ➤ LOVB Nebraska swept LOVB Atlanta with a strong performance led by match MVP Kimberly Drewniok, while the Supernovas lost a five-set match to Orlando Valkyries on Friday. The team also announced leadership changes, with Diane Mendenhall taking on a co-owner role. WOWT
- ➤ Big John's Billiards hosted a women's state pinball tournament over the weekend where 16 players competed for the title and back-to-back champion Courtney Moncrief aims for her third win.
