EDUCATION NEWS

  • A survey by the Afterschool Alliance shows that only one-quarter of Omaha children needing afterschool programs are enrolled, leaving officials from Collective for Youth hoping more funding will boost staff numbers and expand safe, supervised activities.  WOWT
  • An Omaha study finds that three of every four children needing after-school care lack access to programs — a gap that local experts say calls for expanded services.  Omaha World-Herald

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • UNO officials evacuated the Criss Library and the McGoogan Health Sciences Library Monday due to a potential threat (both are closed until 3 p.m.) and advised people to avoid the area.  KETV
  • The Farnam Street Bridge was demolished this weekend as part of the Omaha Streetcar Project, forcing drivers to seek alternate routes and prompting local businesses, including Zen Coffee Company (whose hours have been shortened), to adjust to the construction zone. Rebuilding is expected to take about a year.  WOWT
  • The intersection of Turner Boulevard and Farnam Street in Midtown Crossing closed Monday for utility work needed for the Omaha Streetcar project, and drivers were advised to use detours on Dodge Street. Limited eastbound traffic remains on Farnam (the closure lasts four months and the streetcar will launch by 2028).  KETV

HEALTH NEWS

  • Omaha doctor Dr. Ali Khan, dean of UNMC’s College of Public Health, has traveled the globe studying diseases. He is working to restore public trust in health amid growing concern over the undermining of public health.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Nebraska hospital leaders warn rising costs, Medicaid cuts and expiring tax credits could limit care statewide (especially in rural areas). They urge lawmakers to maintain funding as a survey shows over half of hospitals expect a challenging 2025 with many already facing negative margins.  WOWT

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • NAI NP Dodge's Q4 2025 report showed that Omaha's office, retail and industrial markets improved with falling vacancies and higher rental rates. Future projects include upscale retailers opening at Avenue One in 2027, a hotel program set by the city near CHI Health Center and Union Omaha planning a 114 million dollar stadium district in North Downtown.  Grow Omaha

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tony Osburn reached 1,000 career points with a 3-pointer in the opening minutes of last Thursday’s win over North Dakota. The senior guard (the 45th Maverick to hit the milestone) now leads his team as he builds on four seasons of growth.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Nebraska men's basketball matched its highest AP Top 25 ranking at No. 8 after a win over Indiana at Assembly Hall — the Huskers host Oregon today.  KETV
  • Former Nebraska quarterback Dylan Raiola committed to Oregon after announcing his decision on Monday. Raiola threw for 2,000 yards last season and will serve as backup in 2026—potentially taking over as starter in 2027 if Oregon's current quarterback returns.  KETV
