CRIME NEWS

  • On Saturday night, the Nebraska State Capitol was lit blue for Human Trafficking Awareness Day as nonprofits and local police joined forces to highlight early signs of trafficking and urge the public to report concerns.  KETV

CULTURE NEWS

  • Thousands watched torchbearers carry the Olympic flame through Omaha and Council Bluffs yesterday, marking a notable historical celebration in the metro.  WOWT

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Creighton University announced its new athletic facility — The Bill, named to honor longtime donor Bill Scott — will offer 10,000 sqft for strength training, outdoor practice and dining just west of The Ruth. The space meets student-athlete needs while preserving his legacy.  WOWT

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Ponca Tribe of Nebraska will build a new 42,000 sqft health clinic on its 11.25-acre campus near 84th & Park Drive, replacing a razed 96,000 sqft temporary facility. The tribe will relocate its current Fred LeRoy Health and Wellness Clinic from 2602 J Street after construction is complete.  Grow Omaha

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Crews demolished a 3-story hotel building at 2211 Douglas Street to clear space for an affordable apartment project downtown. Hoppe Development will build a 73-unit mixed-income senior housing community+ with many units affordable to households earning 60% or less of the area median income, with first residents moving in fall.  Grow Omaha
  • McGregor Interests, Inc. completed development of Omaha Contractor Bays’ new 30,000 sqft industrial building in Bennington north of 156th & Highway 36. The facility offers suites from 1,250 to 5,000 sqft with retail storefronts, large overhead doors, high ceilings, and customizable floor plans for contractors and tradespeople.  Grow Omaha

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska will hire Corey Brown as its defensive line coach under head coach Matt Rhule. Brown, who coached the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks for three years and worked at Rutgers, fills the vacancy after Terry Bradden’s dismissal.  WOWT
  • Former Nebraska quarterback Daniel Kaelin (a Bellevue West grad who spent one year at Virginia) will return to the Huskers after exiting the transfer portal. He is set to rejoin the team for the upcoming season.  Omaha World-Herald
  • Creighton fans continued their annual (Pink Out) game tradition to raise breast cancer awareness at a recent game in Omaha. The national champs played impressively to energize the crowd.  WOWT
  • Nebraska gymnastics legend Jim Hartung, an Olympic gold medalist and longtime coach who led the Huskers to four NCAA titles, died at 65 and leaves behind a lasting legacy in local sports. He served 19 seasons as an assistant coach and was honored in the Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame.  WOWT
  • LOVB Nebraska outlasted LOVB Houston 3-2 in its home opener yesterday — the win sets a promising tone for the team’s season.  WOWT
