COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Food Bank for the Heartland is opening a food pantry in Lexington on Jan. 20 to help residents as the Tyson Foods plant closes that day. The nonprofit is also supporting food pantry partners within a 50-mile radius (15.3% of Dawson County residents are food insecure).  KETV

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Uber driver Willis Renshaw in Omaha lost two weeks’ pay to a spoof text scam but later received a $1,775 reimbursement from Uber after a First Alert 6 investigation; he said the payout came when he needed help covering his son's hospital bills after a stroke.  WOWT
  • Atlanta-based Small Sliders has signed a development agreement to open four quick-serve burger restaurants in Omaha + Lincoln while site selection is underway. One of the restaurant's owners is former NFL quarterback Drew Brees.  Grow Omaha
  • Paradise Bakery & Café will open a new location at Nebraska Medicine's Village Pointe campus at 111 North 175th Street near 175th & Burke Street. The bakery relocated from Village Pointe Shopping Center after reopening at Nebraska Crossing in January 2025.  Grow Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Nebraska Board of Regents postponed its meeting Thursday to review an $800 million Nebraska Medicine deal after lawmakers called for a pause, leaving the future of the plan uncertain. Future discussions will be scheduled as the situation evolves.  Omaha World-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • Lawmakers are debating a bill to lower high health insurance premiums as thousands of metro policyholders continue to feel the impact. The debate is ongoing and aims to deliver relief from costly coverage.  WOWT

SPORTS NEWS

  • Nebraska earned a commitment from former UCLA defensive end Anthony Jones on Thursday when he announced his decision to join the Huskers via social media. The redshirt junior measured 6 ft 5 in and weighed 265 lbs, played 37 games (14 starts) at four schools, and adds veteran experience.  KETV
  • The No. 25 Nebraska women's basketball team defeated Indiana (78-73) on Jan. 8 in a closely contested game. The win boosts the Huskers' strong season.  WOWT
  • On Thursday, Tony Osburn scored a season-high 27 points and reached 1,013 points (the 45th milestone in Maverick history) to help Omaha secure a 90-79 win over North Dakota at Baxter Arena.  University of Nebraska Omaha
