COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Cryer Pool, a 50-year community hub at 118th and Cryer Avenue, is permanently closing as crews begin demolition; the city plans to replace it with a splashpad, raising concerns from a local mom who worries about losing affordable family recreation (repairs would cost roughly $500K).  WOWT

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Simplifi Automated Environments is relocating its Omaha office to 4509 South 143rd Street in the Southwestern Plaza development. Interior build-out is underway with an opening expected in two months, and the company, owned by Doug Dushan & Derrick Potts, has grown into the largest custom residential AV business locally.  Grow Omaha

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Monday night, the Nebraska Medical Cannabis Commission approved new emergency regulations and one cultivator license — changes take effect after Gov. Jim Pillen signs them. Commissioners will hold a second hearing on the revised rules and launch a standalone website to update current cannabis information.  KETV
  • The Omaha Police Department welcomed its newest class of recruits today and said training will begin in the coming weeks (details pending).  WOWT
  • Omaha's extra dining tax was introduced 15 years ago during a heated debate that nearly unseated a mayor, and the policy still affects restaurant bills today.  Omaha World-Herald

HEALTH NEWS

  • NU President Dr. Jeffrey Gold said today that patient care will improve when the proposed deal with Clarkson takes effect — ending nearly 30 years of partnership between Clarkson Regional Health Services and Nebraska Medicine as it awaits further board review.  WOWT

SPORTS NEWS

  • UNO’s intramural flag football team, the Dirtier Dozen, won its third consecutive NIRSA regional title at the University of Nebraska (Lincoln) in November. Four players made the All-Tournament Team, including one earning MVP honors, although the team did not compete in Nationals scheduled for Jan. 7 to 9.  University of Nebraska Omaha
  • Braden Frager scored 15 points and hit a clutch field goal with 32 seconds left as Nebraska won 72-69 at Ohio State. The Huskers remained undefeated at 15-0 and moved to #10 in the AP Top 25.  WOWT
  • At the start of the new year, Nebraska’s transfer portal lists 18 players mainly from defense—safety Caden VerMaas and legacy Maverick Noonan among them—while the departure of five-star quarterback Dylan Raiola marks a major loss for the Huskers; over 4,500 players are in the portal nationwide.  KETV
  • Notre Dame transfer quarterback Kenny Minchey is expected to join Kentucky after he recently committed to Nebraska, as sources (via ESPN) report he will work under Wildcats coach Will Stein. His move adds to a busy transfer period in NCAA football.  WOWT
