- ➤ Omaha-based Helget Gas announced Friday it acquired CESCO, an Arkansas gas + beverage company that expands its network to 15 locations. Omaha World-Herald
- ➤ Sand Point will close its Miracle Hills restaurant at 655 North 114th Street near 114th & Dodge on Jan. 17. The New England style restaurant, known for lobster rolls and soups, opened in Oct. 2023. Grow Omaha
- ➤ Hyper Energy Bar from Urbandale, IA opened its first local drive-thru at 3561 North 181st Street near 180th and West Maple Road, and the chain will add new sites near 180th and Burke Street and 204th and Harrison Street soon. Grow Omaha
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ A law taking effect in 2026 will end the tax credit for food donations from grocery stores + farmers and restaurants, prompting Open Door Mission to warn donations may drop. The pantry, which gets 90% of its food through community support, serves meals three times daily to help those in need. KETV
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ On Saturday, UNMC students held free blood pressure screenings at four Omaha barbershops (including Keelan’s Barber and Beauty) to raise awareness of hypertension risks in underserved communities. The SNMA will run a similar effort in about six months. WOWT
- ➤ UNMC students are hosting free blood pressure screenings at their campus in Omaha to help community members track and manage hypertension & encourage regular checks every 3-6 months. WOWT
SPORTS NEWS
- ➤ Omaha Hockey lost to No. 17 Cornell 3-2 Saturday night as freshman forward Jérémy Loranger (scoring in four straight games) scored two goals to tie the game before Cornell netted a late winner with 15:30 left in the third period. - ➤ Omaha Men's Basketball lost 73-66 to Kansas City at Baxter Arena Saturday night — ending a nine-game home winning streak. Paul Djobet led with 16 points, and the team will host North Dakota at 7 p.m. Thursday. University of Nebraska Omaha
- ➤ Nebraska wrestling team won a top-20 dual meet over Northern Iowa by defeating the No. 16 Panthers 30-6, keeping its unbeaten record (14-0) after a recent win over No. 9 Michigan State. WOWT
- ➤ Nebraska’s football team remains undefeated at 14-0 after beating No.9 Michigan State, and the wrestling squad defeated top-20 Northern Iowa 30-6 on Jan. 2. WOWT
- ➤ Creighton's basketball teams posted mixed results this week. The men extended a four-game win streak with a four-point victory over Butler and a rout of Utah Tech while the women's team lost 88-79 to Seton Hall. WOWT
- ➤ Omaha North girls and Westside boys won the Metro Holiday Tournament titles Saturday, earning local recognition in a well-contested basketball event. WOWT
