In 1974, Omaha native Bob Gibson recorded his 3,000th strikeout for the St. Louis Cardinals in a game against the Cincinnati Reds—he became the second pitcher to reach that milestone even though his team lost. He ended his 17-year career with 3,117 strikeouts and was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1981.
